I checked with nominet/ whois and appears my domain I bought a few weeks ago is registered not to me but to Hostpapa. Does anyone know why this is? I have tried to contact Hostpapa over 10 times now via the online support

If you got the domain from hostpapa with the hosting package, then you do not own the domain, HostPapa do.

How can that be? I never would have gone with host papa if Id relaised that. I assumed like with all other hosting providers the domain is what I paid for
I need to own the domain as it's my whole business.What can I do?

If you still want to own the domain you can ask HostPapa for the domain. They will of course charge you for this, I think it is around $25, If they refuse tell them you want to leave hostpapa as it is not what you were looking for and you want to take the domain with you (charge will still apply).

Thanks. I don't understand how they can say it is " a free domain" for life when infact they decide to register themselves to to the domain, and they have failed to make their intention specifically clear. I feel I have been missold a product. I have tried to contact them over 20 times now I am not happy

I appreciate your help though Smiley

I just found this in the FAQ Pre-sales section of the forum;

FAQ: If you register my domain, who owns it?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

If you register my domain, who owns it?

When we register a domain, we register it on your behalf. You will be the owner.

This is what I was lead to believe. Does anyone else not own their own domain they paid for?

From HostPapa knowledgebase

Your HostPapa web hosting package includes a Free Domain Name for Life. What this means is that we will register and renew a domain name for you so long as you are a HostPapa customer. Should you decide to leave HostPapa for any reason, we will release the domain name to you upon payment for the original registration. Please note that there is a fee for this type of domain name registration.

You own the domain name, HostPapa will be known as the registrar. For example I buy through 123reg.co.uk and the WhoIs info reflects me as the owner but 123reg as the registrar.

If you are worried and live in the UK check out the Nominet website which will detail your rights concerning domain name ownership.
