This may be of use for those who have PHPList installed and are trying to get a cron job to send newsletters/messages.

I've spent some time on another CPanel hosting service and have put in hours of research trying to make cron jobs work with PHPList.  Not fluent in PHP or Unix at all, I'm not saying this is the only solution, but you may be interested to know that this has worked for me on HostPapa.  The cron job added by PHPList during the Fantastico install does not work in my experience.

To process the cron I'm using the following text for the cron:

/usr/local/bin/php -q /home/MY HOSTING ACCOUNT/public_html/phplist/admin/index.php -p processqueue

... of course, change the HOSTING account to your own!

Since Host Papa (like most shared hosting) limits the number of messages per hour -- they changed mine to 500 per hour maximum -- you need to set up your PHPList config file (pUblic_html/your install directory/config/config.php) to throttle appropriately.  I have the cron set to fire every fifteen minutes, with the PHPList config set to batch 85 messages every 860 seconds (a little under 15 min) with the throttle of 10 sec.

As I say, this is not the expert answer ... it just works.  Hope it helps.

Glad someone found this of use.

A few months after this original post, I had problems getting a cron to work with PHPList ... again!  Everything seemed to go along great for months and then ... pow.  It all stopped.

I went on the hunt for a more user friendly mailing list app to send newsletters.  Found poMMo, installed, set it up, imported the user list from PHPList and it works ... pretty much flawlessly.  Seems one of the best things about it is that it doesn't require a cron command to run.  Its open source.  I like it a lot.
