If I create new folder in www to put my files, I notice that the folder is created in public_ html.  If this is the default, what is the intention of the www folder?

Since I posted this question, I see that in my FTP program, the folder www is classified as a link.  I am no further ahead understanding the significance of this.  Can someone explain why I cannot make a new folder here??

www is just an alias for the public_html folder.

Ok thanks, I am new at all this.  Can you, or a moderator, explain what the alias is used for?  This is part of my learning curve.  I would appreciate it.

Hello,

Originally in web hosting public_html was the folder that people put all their site files into.  Somewhere along the line people started wanting a simpler term, seeing as how public_html isn't as freindly as www.  So Unix/Linux hosting servers started making this alias for www, it's like a shortcut to the public_html if you think of it in terms of your computer.

Feel free to drop your files into either as it only takes up the disk space once and they'll always show the same thing.

Kind regards,
Nelson
